A great preschool or nursery school lesson plan includes music. Music to sing with, music to dance to, to clap to, and music
that signals that it's time for the toddler to get out her nap mat.
Karen Merchant's new CD, Come to the Window, is by turns haunting and enchanting. It is a collection of
what the singer calls "nightsongs and lullabies," although this description may not do justice to either
the musical or the geographical range of material on this album.
Teachers: looking for a preschool, nursery school, or kindergarten music activity, this CD is for you.
Parents: looking for a special gift for a young child, you can give a gift of kid music that will delight
and relax your child.

When the CD starts playing the children pull out their nap mats and get ready for their nap. Track 1, track 4 and track
9 are especially good for a "nap time" indicator. All of the songs are interesting and soothing - perfect for nap time!
Merchant's dreamy, yet crystal clear vocals are variously accompanied by cello, clarinet, flute,
percussion and guitar. On "Cancion de Cuna" she sings a vibrant duet with Luiz Simas. The chemistry
between the two voices on this Catalan song creates a lush, tropical mood, yet one that is spiced with
romantic tension.
This CD is also one that will wear well, as greater depth and detail are revealed with each repeated
listening. Romantic moods and lyrical lullabies are interspersed with the whimsical sounds of music
boxes and children's' voices, and Merchant glides effortlessly between languages, styles and cultures.
Come to the Window is quite simply a profound selection of songs delivered with a rare combination of
beauty, polish and depth of feeling.

This international collection of lullabies is a parent's dream.
Karen Merchant's Come to the Window has
been part of my daughter Laura's bedtime routine for several months now. My daughter is seven years old,
a very high energy (hyperactive) child, and we have often struggled for hours simply to keep her in bed.
Since we began using the CD at nighttime, Laura has decided that bed is a blissful place to be. It's a
soothing experience for me, too, since the lullabies are not only beautifully sung, but ethnically diverse
and superbly arranged. I recommend this CD for anyone who wants tunes that are tranquil, lilting, and
quietly inspiring.
