Karen Merchant's Come to the Window CD
The first time I listened to Come to the Window,
I realized this is not a CD of lullabies for babies. This is a collection
of lullabies for all of us, young and old.
Karen’s voice is full, rich and inviting. She beckons to me: come into
my world where I feel love, close your eyes, rest, come away with me for
a time, just a short while. Let go."
In time, as I played COME TO THE WINDOW again and again,
I became captivated with how Karen’s voice, the lyrics and music pulled me
into the songs which became metaphors for my inner child’s imagination.
I AM HERE NOW reminds me of Loreena Mckenna. Tender and sweet, it has soothing, safe corners to sigh into; then, I literally fell into BERCEUSE’s haunting melodies where I saw my little self and cried precious relief from old hurts and emotional bruises.
In AY MI PALOMITA’s love song, I became angel’s wings circling the baby’s bed, promising dreams of laughter, hope and safety.
NUNNU, CHINDLI SCHLAF’s whimsical beginning came right out of the amplifier of an ice cream van’s bright red cab as I ran down the street excitedly waving my arms to get the driver’s attention…only to fall back into a field of daisies, smiling up at a cloud-puffy blue sky, the song's chant a perfect partner to a perfect day of play.
While listening to THE LITTLE HORSES, I saw myself pleading with my mama to sing this to me as my first lullaby at bedtime, my hands folded over my blankee, waiting expectantly for all the pretty little blacks and bays, dapples and grays to gallop off to sleep with me riding over hills and valleys, my hair flying in the wind.
Next, in INTERLUDE I entered what seemed like a portal to gentle memories of past childhoods, INTERLUDE deserves to be played after a most satisfying and wholesome meal while it’s raining outside. I became absolutely satisfied and still.
I wanted to find my rocking chair when I began GO TER SLEEP. I wanted to cuddle into a strong arm and shoulder, nuzzling and being nuzzled, whispered words of love above my sleepy head.
CANCION DE CUNA had me up on my bed dancing a slow, dreamy cha cha cha in my jammies, in my sleep, my partner a gecko dressed in bright pink polka dots.
In THE SKYE BOAT SONG I flew around the world in the shimmering blue/black night sky on a winged blue and green plaid blanket, watching over all the babies as they slept.
O CAN YE SEW CUSHIONS? felt like such a perfect metaphor for a peaceful portrait of mama singing while she sews or stirs the soup, the children by the fire playing with blocks or coloring, all is well in the world.
COME TO THE WINDOW brought the full moon pouring light onto my lap as I peered out watching the shadows from the trees dance and commune.
DURME, DURME brought out intense feelings of sorrow. Then I saw a mother hovering over the curled body of a child who has fallen down and cries hot tears of pain over the red scrapes on her knees and tiny hands.
CLOSING commands the entire CD. No lyrics, simply crystal tones of magic taking us on our carousel horse to faraway places where we are loved and safe and honored.
Thank you Karen for bringing me this joy! I play COME TO THE WINDOW while working at the computer, while organizing my studio, while cooking dinner, while going to sleep.
And what I know to be true is this: in a world stricken ill with what seems like never-ending violence and indifference, COME TO THE WINDOW brings me full circle back to my heart space.
And THAT is very good thing. Simple and powerful.
A very good thing.
